Week 28 Roundup — 2026
The Big Picture
5 entries this week, and the densest week of the digest so far. The week opened with Sun Valley putting every AI CEO in the same room while retail bled on semis. By Wednesday, Iran had replaced semiconductors as the market’s primary variable. By Friday, GPT-5.6 launched a three-tier model family, SK Hynix’s $26.5B IPO validated the AI infrastructure thesis at the institutional layer, and a four-paragraph blog post about LLMs absorbing your bad code patterns turned out to be the most practically useful piece of writing all week.
The thread across all five entries: the gap between what’s true and what’s priced. Samsung’s 19x profit surge is true. The 200-350% semis run was priced wrong. Anthropic’s J-space paper is a genuine interpretability breakthrough. The safety implications will take years to price correctly. The “LLMs are sponges” insight is true for every team using AI to write code. Almost nobody has priced it into their engineering workflow yet.
Best Of This Week
1. Daily Digest — July 6, 2026 — July 6
Retail is exhausted on semis and calling SpaceX exit liquidity at 112x sales while r/investing reads the same correction as rotation not recession, Sun Valley puts Altman, Amodei, Zuckerberg, and Cook in the same room, Cloudflare ships Workers Cache with a multi-tenant key model no other CDN has, and the Fable field guide reframes the agentic bottleneck as an unknowns problem.
2. Daily Digest — July 7, 2026 — July 7
Semis pain deepens as Samsung posts a 19x profit surge retail is calling an AI bubble, Ben Thompson writes the Meta earnings script Zuckerberg should actually deliver, Anthropic’s J-space paper finds Claude’s global workspace and uses it to catch the model lying, and the 100x agentic engineer turns out to be a preferences problem not a prompting problem.
3. Daily Digest — July 8, 2026 — July 8
Iran/Hormuz ceasefire collapse turns the market into an oil and war desk, Thompson’s internet-as-bundle-solvent framework explains exactly why Xbox failed, Alibaba’s distillation attack on Claude and Microsoft quietly swapping out OpenAI for its own models frame the same enterprise AI risk from opposite directions, and the tech workforce is splitting into two irreconcilable realities.
4. Daily Digest — July 9, 2026 — July 9
The market priced Iran in 72 hours while SK Hynix 7x oversubscribed signals memory fundamentals are real, Alex Karp’s ‘enterprises are livid’ quote frames the enterprise AI trust crisis Thompson’s verification thesis explains, Anthropic ships GRAM to make dual-use knowledge removable while China counter-punches on Claude Code, and OpenAI retracts SWE-bench Pro as 30% broken while Addy Osmani names the accountability gap agents create.
5. Daily Digest — July 10, 2026 — July 10
SK Hynix raises $26.5B at 7x oversubscription as the clearest gauge yet of institutional appetite for Anthropic and OpenAI IPOs, Meta prices Muse Spark at 25% of competitors to win the market Meta can afford to lose on, GPT-5.6 launches a three-tier model family with multi-agent ultra mode that closes most of the gap with Fable, and every bad shortcut you merge trains the LLM to repeat it.
One Thing I’m Watching
Earnings season opens tomorrow with JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs. Netflix, UnitedHealth, and TSMC report Thursday. The big banks will tell us whether enterprise AI spend is showing up in actual loan activity and capital allocation — or whether it’s still running on venture capital and hyperscaler balance sheets. TSMC on Thursday is the one that threads back to this week’s memory thesis: if TSMC’s guidance confirms sustained AI chip demand through 2027, the SK Hynix IPO thesis holds and the semis correction looks like a buying opportunity. If guidance softens, the 200-350% run was the trade, not the trend.
